Terrorizer Magazine Hail Alunah as Future of Doom and Soph Gets Interviewed!

4/3/2012

Comments

So who's got their copy of Terrorizer Magazine's "Secret History of Doom" magazine special yet?? If so, you'll have noticed that they have very kindly included us in their future of doom section alongside our buddies in Trippy Wicked And The Kosmic Children Of The Knight and Undersmile. We're also featured on their "Doom or be Doomed" CD with our track "Call of Avernus" alongside such awesomeness as Saint Vitus, Lord Vicar and Witch Mountain.

The magazine features interviews with Black Sabbath, Cathedral, Pentagram, Sunno)), Lord Vicar, Sleep, Paradise Lost, Candlemass and Electric Wizard. Soph was interviewed for the Future of Doom piece but as it was not all included here's the interview in full:

In our future of doom feature you're the only band in it that hail from the genre's birthplace of Birmingham - how do you feel about your hometown and are you proud it spawned the music you love?

Yeah we come from the surrounding areas of Birmingham and can safely say that we all love the area and are huge fans of the music it has given birth to - especially a certain band from Aston! I have always been proud of our musical heritage but the recent Home of Metal events that were held in and around the area really drove home to me just how proud I am of being in a band from the Midlands, not just Birmingham but the whole area. In fact, we get asked very often by bands coming over from different countries to show them around Aston!

How do you feel being hailed by Terrorizer as the future of doom? Is this something you are proud of and who do you consider your contemporary peers?

Yeah its pretty cool for you guys to refer to us as being the future of doom. Like I say, doom is only one element of our sound but it is a pretty big element and one that pushes us to explore various styles within the doom spectrum. Bands who we consider to be our contemporary peers include Trippy Wicked & The Cosmic Children of the Knight, General, Stubb, Serpent Venom, Sigiriya and Gringo. There are many many more though, too many to mention here.

Do you agree that there is something about Birmingham that lends itself to doom? Even now, when it's been drastically regenerated?

Its been pretty well documented that Birmingham inspired Black Sabbath to play the way they did, along with Tony's accident, but nowadays its a totally different city and I feel more inspired standing in the middle of a field than I do standing in the middle of Birmingham. Also, doom is only one facet of what we do, we find inspiration in many areas. I think if Birmingham lent itself to doom that much, there would be a lot more doom bands coming from the area and unfortunately there is hardly any.

You've been heavily touring recently, are you happiest on the road or in the studio?

If I had to choose I would say that I prefer being on the road but I love being in the studio laying down months of hard work. It's always great to hear the new material taking shape and coming together. Being on the road is freedom, breaking from the daily grind, doing what you love, meeting new people, visiting new places and having dirty hair! We've just signed with Big Bad Mothers House booking agency so we're looking at having a lot more shows and tours in the coming year.

You've got a new album, tell us about that?

Yeah we're just about to record the new album which we're recording again with Greg Chandler but this time mixing and mastering with Tony Reed from Stone Axe / Mos Generator who has just recorded the new St. Vitus album. We'll be releasing it around Summer time with PsycheDOOMelic Records and looking to tour in September. We haven't spent as long writing as we did for "Call of Avernus" and as a result have focused more on the direction we want to take, we think it is a much more rounded album.

Hey!

Hope you're all getting ready to eat too much, drink far too much and receive/give some awesome pressies! Who says the true meaning of Christmas is lost on us! We also want to thank everyone who made 2011 such an amazing year for us, with special thanks to the following:

Mark at PsycheDOOMelic Records for having enough faith in us to sign us and release our second album in 2012.

The awesome Mez of Heretic Promotions at Scruffy Murphys in Birmingham for being one of the best promoters and sound engineers that we deal with. Scruffy's is the best underground music venue in the Midlands and Mez does them proud! Two more awesome promoters - Dan and Reece at DesertScene! Constantly bringing the best bands over to the UK to play and inviting Alunah to play with them. This year we were invited to support Acid King and Karma to Burn and next year we're on the DesertFest bill - these guys deserve a HUGE thank you. There are loads of promoters who have helped us out this year - too many to mention so if we've not mentioned you we still love ya!!

Bob at Soggy Bog who has continually supported us throughout the year and for inviting Soph to guest on one of his podcasts (listen here). Hellride Music, Core of Destruction Radio, Grip of Delusion Radio, Midlands Rocks, Blood Worm Brand and anyone else we've missed.

Bit cheesy but everyone in 2011 who has watched us, listened to us, brought our merch, brought us drinks, told everyone how much they like us and even told everyone how much they hate us... it's all good!

Massive thanks and salutations to the following bands who we've had the pleasure of sharing a stage with this year, if we've missed you it's nowt personal we were probaby just drunk! Acid King, Carlton Melton, Sally, Lifer, General, Karma to Burn, Fu Manchu, Black Spiders, Bastard of The Skies, Engines of Armageddon, Meadows, Iron Void, Viking Skull, Slab, Desert Storm, Pig Iron, Stone Axe, Stubb, Trippy Wicked and the Kosmic Children of the Knight (I used the full name lads!!), Firebird, Serpent Venom, A Million Miles, Gringo, Shebrew, Gurt and Dopefight.

2012 will be even better, we'll give birth to our second album which again will be recorded by the awesome Greg Chandler but mixed and mastered by Tony Reed of Stone Axe. we're supporting A Pale Horse Named Death (members of Type of Negative, Biohazard and Life of Agony - tickets £9 from us with free p&p), we're featuring on the Fallng Down zine compilation (track can be listened to here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bl8aLhOpAew
) We're embarking on a couple of tours... more details soon but one will hopefully be with a PsycheDOOMelic label mate, the mighty DesertFest in Camden in April, and the International Powerhouse Doom Fest at Scruffy Murphys with Stone Axe (USA), Stubb (UK), Trippy Wicked and the Kosmic Children of the Knight (UK), Cultura Tres (VEN) and Banda de la Muerte (ARG).

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!! See you in 2012!

We're proud to announce that we will be once again working with the awesome Greg Chandler of Esoteric to record our second album which will be out mid-2012 on PsycheDOOMelic Records. Greg has previously worked with Serpentcult, Moss and of course us, he did such a blinding job with "Call of Avernus" at his idyllic rural studios in Canwell near Sutton Coldfield that we can't wait to return. This time around we will be turning to Tony Reed of Mos Generator and Stone Axe to mix and master the album. What we have heard of Tony's work so far is awesome and he is currently working on the new St. Vitus record so we are definetly in good hands. The title of the new album will be announced very soon.
