| "I popped along to the Unicorn in north Camden, a very relaxed venue, a good choice of branded beers cider, and other assorted beverages at pub prices, and not London prices. I had missed the first band on the 3 band bill, one of the bands had pulled out. But after doing some work for BPR I caught the last 15 minutes of Obiat. Now in my opinion although the sound was like an Alice in Chains direction, an absolute quality band, that had its musical hooks well dug in. Alunah pull no punches, they do exactly what it says on the tin. I`ll be the first to hold my hand up and say, i`m not fully tuned in to the DOOM scene, but I did get plenty of bands to check out, so watch this space. The first thing strikes you, is the riffs that continually fly out the Guitar of Dave Day, outstanding stuff. The vocals of Soph Day are cool calm and have that haunting quality. No soprano or screamo or gutteral, but a rock/metal style with a hint of psychedelia over tones. On top of the strong metal sound of guitar and bass. The general sound of the combined outfit is a down tuned sound that for me is also up tempo, Unique. The guitar riffs are almost threatening, as in a cat thats giving a warning ready to attack. Its that edginess that then delivers that kick into the songs, check out any song in their armoury. When you listen to the recorded material, their influences such as Black Sabbath are there for all to hear, but by the same token you couldn`t say that they have copied the Sabbath sound. If you like their music, or even if you don`t, you cannot disrespect what they do. White Hoarhound stands out as a brilliant track, But you have to love Belial`s Fjord, it is a beautiful creation in every department, the general tune along with the Haunting vocal just stood out to me right at the end of an already impressive set. I seriously recommend Alunah to any one who likes to discover something original. Look out for the BPR Interview" |
