Well, what can we say about DesertFest that has not already been said? Reece and Dan did an amazing job and we're so proud to be part of the first in (hopefully) a long line of successful DesertFests!

Cheers to JJ from The Obelisk for the awesome review, great to meet the great man too!

There was a little time before Alunah were set to go on at The Black Heart, but I made my way over there early to get a spot up front. Grabbed a beer and bought a copy of Alunah‘s Call of Avernus before they took the stage, which they did following some technical difficulties with bassist Gaz Imber‘s amp. The troubles were short-lived, though, which I suppose is one of the benefits of having your fest sponsored by Orange — an awesome-sounding replacement for whatever’s broken is never far off. They were cool, unpretentious riffy doom. Vocalist/guitaristSoph Day had the crowd eating out of her hand, and the whole band seemed right at home both with the audience and in the venue. I’m still reminded of Acid King by Day‘s echoing vocals, but that’s hardly a complaint in my mind. Their next record, which will be their first forPsycheDOOMelic — apparently titled White Hoarhound — is one to look forward to. Like Grifter who would play later, Alunah seem to be coming of age as a band and it was exciting to watch. Valient Thorr was on atThe Underworld, and I heard later they were great, but seeing Alunahplay under their psychedelic lighting effects, I felt like I was right where I needed to be.

I wanted to know which are your feelings towards the passion of Mister for Doom and Heavy musics in general... Could they be slow and gloomy or fast and brutal, how do you enjoy these weird sounds ? Do you sometimes take vengeance and play crappy Pop stuff just to piss him off?

For those that may not know I'm married to Dave the guitarist in Alunah, the band which I also sing and play guitar in, so luckily we are on a par music taste wise. However, saying that, there are a lot of bands which we strongly disagree on. For instance, Dave listens to a lot of thrash, grind and nwobhm which I can really do without. As well as doom, stoner, sludge etc I listen to more '60s psychedelia, motown and folk. I live for the melody in music whereas he lives for the riff, so we do have a lot of friendly disagreements on what bands are awesome... mainly him informing me that Iron Maiden are unbelievably amazing and me informing him they're shit! The majority of music we listen to we both love, we've been together for 13 years and have been married for just 4 months - I don't think I could have lasted that long with someone who didn't share my musical tastes. Neither of us will ever back down on the Iron Maiden front! If I ever wanted to piss him off all I've got to do is put Big Elf, Ghost or Ray Lamontagne on the stereo... all big loves of mine, he doesn't share my view!

Are you proud of what he's doing with his band/blog/Radioshow ?!! Do you think this is more rewarding to play in a respected but underground Doom band than playing shit in a wellknown band ? Do you think playing Doom is necessay to his equilibrium and maybe that only this kind of music can bring him what he needs or is looking for ?

I know for a fact that Dave would not play music that he didn't enjoy playing, regardless of the fame or the money. He's been in bands since he was 16, all very different styles which reflect his tastes at the time. He's got such diverse tastes that its not just about the doom, its about playing whatever he enjoys. His last 3 bands Sonic Lord, Godsize and Alunah all have doom elements but each one totally different. I'm proud of Dave for many things but music wise, a couple of years into our relationship Dave started a sludge band in Birmingham called Sonic Lord. I was in my late teens when they started gigging with such bands as Khang, Sloth, Mistress etc. I used to love seeing him up there on the stage playing with bands I loved... plus, if I'm honest I was also jealous as it was something I'd loved to have done. We actually met Jake, Alunah's drummer at a Sonic Lord gig, his girlfriend Liv and him were always cropping up at Sonic Lord shows. Unfortunately Sonic Lord split up a few years back but we're still selling vinyls now.

Dave was also in Godsize who split up last year. When they went on their first big tour I was so proud and again, jealous! The tour was with Freebase in Metallica's 1999 tour bus! I've only heard half of what went on during that tour, and I think that's all I want to know! Being 20 years old and watching your boyfriend's band sell out venues was pretty special. I'm hoping that with our achievements over the past 6 years with Alunah, and me overcoming my absolute fear of singing, has made him proud.

Does he still have enough time for both houseworks and cuddles, or sometimes there's difficult choice to make between both ?!

We try to make time for each other, both of us work full time, are busy with Alunah, run Catacomb Records and each have a million other projects going on. We don't live in each others pockets, we don't demand to know where the other one is every minute of the day or night and have the utmost respect and trust for each other. Dave's a lot better at cuddles than he is at housework... saying that though I reckon I am too! We've got a very 1950s outlook... I do the baking and he fixes my car! He is pretty good at washing up and cleaning the bathroom though!

When he's listening music with headphones, computering on the net, practising with his band, playing gigs far away... do you feel alone quickly or is it an opportunity for you to meet friends/parents, make some things you enjoy but can't do together, etc... ?

Its not something I really notice that much as we're both really busy. When he's not on his guitar or fixing up a car, he's building computers or on the computer researching his latest project but that's what I love about him. Who wants an unmotivated couch potato who up to date on all the latest television? If there's ever a time when I want to take a break from my things and he's busy, I have family, friends and Johnny Depp films to keep me occupied!

If you're reading this you're probably far too bored for words, but thanks anyway we appreciate it.

It's 8am on a Saturday morning, first day of recording "White Hoarhound" with Greg Chandler at Priory Studios and Soph's been hit with a painful throat and ear virus! At least we get a bit of silence over the weekend though... in all seriousness it is quite bad and we're just hoping that she feels better soon. Luckily vocals aren't being recorded until next weekend... (selfish barstards!)

So, after loading the cars, we make our way (luckily for us, only 15 mins away) through the dense fog to Priory Studios in Canwell. The studios are owned by Greg Chandler who is the singer/guitarist of Esoteric... a man who knows his doom all too well! Being on a weekend, our only neighbours are the sheep, squirrels and rabbits who i'm afraid are about to take a real ear bashing! Poor things! Idyllic and peaceful surroundings... perfect for some doooom!
The next couple of hours are spent setting up and tuning the drums, and getting the heaviest and sexiest sounds possible on the bass and Dave's guitar. Gaz's bass sound is immense and is guaranteed to rattle your pants off! Soph will do hers next weekend along with her vocals (hopefully). The new album is very much inspired by the natural world and being at The Priory in Canwell (the area where a medievel monastry once stood... pretty cool eh?) on such a glorious day will really make the album come alive.
Over the course of the day we got the drums, bass and one rhythm guitar section done for half the album... pretty good going! Some of this time was also spent eating Jake's birthday cake, discussing when we are going to get the barbeque up and running, and nicking Soph's medicinal whiskey... we didn't bother with her honey and lemon though!

Towards the end of the day we had a mad panic when Dave's guitar started to badly crackle which we thought was a blown speaker in his green Matamp cab. He tried his other cab (another green cab which he always says sounds different and we never believed him... but it bloody does! Sounds loads different!) but we couldn't match the sound! Anyway, he took the original one home and looked at it, it all seems fine so we're keeping our fingers crossed!
We started the second day of recording slightly later than planned. Dave had been busy fixing his cab and Soph was feeling worse than she did yesterday which ended up with her going to the emergency doctors, which is really shitty. On a postive note, we managed to lay down drums, bass and one rhythm guitar section for the second half of the album. Greg burned off some rough mixes for us and we're chuffed to bits with the results! If the rough mix sounds this good already we cannot wait to get the final mix! It's already sounding heavier than "Call of Avernus"

So next weekend will be recording Soph's vocals and guitar (all being well!), Dave's lead parts and any extra intricacies that we put in.

Terrorizer Magazine have very kindly hailed us as their "Doom Spotlight Band of the Day" in conjunction with their "Secret History of Doom" magazine which we also featured in. The article also features their interview with Soph where she announces that our follow up to "Call of Avernus" will be entitled "White Hoarhound". The album, which will be recorded by Greg Chandler and mixed/mastered by Tony Reed, will be released in the summer on PsycheDOOMelic Records.

Terrorizer's article can be found here:

We're pleased to announce that we will now be working with Cacophonic PR an extreme metal PR company from the USA. Alunah will be bringing a healthy dose of the psychedelically heavy to the roster which consists of the following clients:

Living Void, ((THORLOCK)), Iron Witch, Abazagorath, Soulseller Records, Eldritch Lunar Miasma Records, NoVisible Scars Records and The Path Less Traveled Records.

Visit their website: http://screamofthedead.com/

So who's got their copy of Terrorizer Magazine's "Secret History of Doom" magazine special yet?? If so, you'll have noticed that they have very kindly included us in their future of doom section alongside our buddies in Trippy Wicked And The Kosmic Children Of The Knight and Undersmile. We're also featured on their "Doom or be Doomed" CD with our track "Call of Avernus" alongside such awesomeness as Saint Vitus, Lord Vicar and Witch Mountain.
The magazine features interviews with Black Sabbath, Cathedral, Pentagram, Sunno)), Lord Vicar, Sleep, Paradise Lost, Candlemass and Electric Wizard. Soph was interviewed for the Future of Doom piece but as it was not all included here's the interview in full:

In our future of doom feature you're the only band in it that hail from the genre's birthplace of Birmingham - how do you feel about your hometown and are you proud it spawned the music you love?

Yeah we come from the surrounding areas of Birmingham and can safely say that we all love the area and are huge fans of the music it has given birth to - especially a certain band from Aston! I have always been proud of our musical heritage but the recent Home of Metal events that were held in and around the area really drove home to me just how proud I am of being in a band from the Midlands, not just Birmingham but the whole area. In fact, we get asked very often by bands coming over from different countries to show them around Aston!

How do you feel being hailed by Terrorizer as the future of doom? Is this something you are proud of and who do you consider your contemporary peers?

Yeah its pretty cool for you guys to refer to us as being the future of doom. Like I say, doom is only one element of our sound but it is a pretty big element and one that pushes us to explore various styles within the doom spectrum. Bands who we consider to be our contemporary peers include Trippy Wicked & The Cosmic Children of the Knight, General, Stubb, Serpent Venom, Sigiriya and Gringo. There are many many more though, too many to mention here.

Do you agree that there is something about Birmingham that lends itself to doom? Even now, when it's been drastically regenerated?

Its been pretty well documented that Birmingham inspired Black Sabbath to play the way they did, along with Tony's accident, but nowadays its a totally different city and I feel more inspired standing in the middle of a field than I do standing in the middle of Birmingham. Also, doom is only one facet of what we do, we find inspiration in many areas. I think if Birmingham lent itself to doom that much, there would be a lot more doom bands coming from the area and unfortunately there is hardly any.

You've been heavily touring recently, are you happiest on the road or in the studio?

If I had to choose I would say that I prefer being on the road but I love being in the studio laying down months of hard work. It's always great to hear the new material taking shape and coming together. Being on the road is freedom, breaking from the daily grind, doing what you love, meeting new people, visiting new places and having dirty hair! We've just signed with Big Bad Mothers House booking agency so we're looking at having a lot more shows and tours in the coming year.

You've got a new album, tell us about that?

Yeah we're just about to record the new album which we're recording again with Greg Chandler but this time mixing and mastering with Tony Reed from Stone Axe / Mos Generator who has just recorded the new St. Vitus album. We'll be releasing it around Summer time with PsycheDOOMelic Records and looking to tour in September. We haven't spent as long writing as we did for "Call of Avernus" and as a result have focused more on the direction we want to take, we think it is a much more rounded album.
